Haddenham Studio Environmental and Sustainability Policy

At Haddenham Studio, our roots lie in decades of award‑winning natural history filmmaking—bringing the wonders of the natural world to screens around the globe. That heritage drives our commitment to conservation: we understand that every frame we capture has the power to inspire audiences to value and protect nature. Guided by this legacy, we pair our storytelling expertise with rigorous environmental stewardship, ensuring that our operations leave the countryside more vibrant and resilient than when we arrived.

1 Scope

This policy applies to all activities at Haddenham Studio, including:
• Studio Operations – our purpose‑built studio, workshop, office and green room
• On‑location Shoots – any filming we support on location
• People & Culture – staff, freelancers, visitors and clients
• Suppliers & Services – catering, accommodation, travel, equipment hire and maintenance

2 Energy & Carbon

    2.1 Renewable Grid Electricity
    • Current Supply – all studio electricity is procured from E.ON on a UK‑REGO‑backed 100 % renewable tariff, ensuring zero Scope 2 emissions from grid consumption.

    2.2 Efficient Heating & Lighting
    • LED‑only lighting – every fixture on set and in offices is dimmable LED, reducing lighting energy by over 80 %.
    • Localised IR Heating – no whole‑building HVAC. Infra‑red radiant panels warm individual workstations only when in use, cutting heating energy by ~90 %.

    2.3 Electric Vehicles & Charging
    • EV Charging – an on‑site 7 kW charger serve staff, crew and clients.
    • Green Fleet – all studio vehicles should be electric where possible; diesel backup phased out by 2027.

    3 On‑site Solar & Storage (31.5 kWp PV + 15 kWh Battery – Planned Q3 2026)

    PV Parameter Value
Array Size 31.5 kWp roof top PV
Estimated Annual Generation ~30 800 kWh
Studio Annual Usage ~4 000 kWh (including HVAC on ~54 days/year)
HVAC Annual Estimate ~432 kWh (mostly demand of cooling)
Battery Storage Capacity 15 kWh lithium battery
    Export to Grid (SEG) ~26 800 kWh/year

Battery Backup: The 15 kWh battery bank smooths demand, storing generation spikes for evening/peak use and providing resilience against short interruptions—boosting overall self‑use by ~20 %.

Grid Export: After on‑site demand is met, around 26 800 kWh of renewable energy is exported under the Smart Export Guarantee, feeding low‑carbon power back into the community.

    4. Water, Waste & Materials

    4.1 Reusable Studio‑ware
    • Branded Reusables – every client and crew member receives a laser‑engraved Haddenham water bottle and coffee cup to keep and refill on‑site.
    • Rainwater Harvesting – roof runoff supplies toilets and external wash‑down, saving 200 m³ potable water/year.

    4.2 Zero to Landfill Waste
    • Comprehensive Recycling – co‑mingled, paper/card, metals, glass, plastics, e‑waste and food waste bins across campus.
    • Catering Serviceware – our local catering partners use only reusable crockery, cutlery and glassware; all organic waste is composted on‑site.  The Studio has a kitchen with full dinner service (crockery and cutlery) for use ensuring no waste.

    4.3 Materials Reuse
    • Set & Prop Library – flats, backdrops, furniture and kit are stored, reused and repurposed, reducing new‑build waste by over 60 %.

    5 Sustainable Procurement
    • Local Suppliers – we partner with small, Buckinghamshire‑based caterers, B&Bs and hire companies to cut transport emissions and support the local economy.
    • Green Contracts – every supplier must demonstrate renewable‑energy sourcing, low‑impact packaging and ethical labour standards.

    6 Biodiversity & Campus Stewardship
    • EPC A‑Rated Building – our studio shell benefits from high‑performance insulation, glazing and airtightness.
    • Wildflower Meadow & Insect Hotel – on‑site planting encourages pollinators; bird boxes and native hedging enhance habitat corridors.

    7 Culture, Training & Governance
    • Sustainability Lead – staff, regular freelancers and clients are briefed on reduction of waste and encouraged to reuse at all times.

    8 Monitoring, Reporting & Targets

    Metric 2024 Baseline 2026 Target
    Net Scope 2 Emissions (t CO₂e) 0 (tariff) 0
    On‑site Solar Generation (kWh) n/a ≥ 30 800
    Battery Storage Capacity (kWh) n/a ≥ 15
    IR Heating Energy (kWh) 1 750 (2024) – 50 %
Waste to Landfill (kg) 0 0
    Local Supplier Spend (% of budget) 65 % ≥ 75 %

By embedding these practices into our daily operations, Haddenham Studio offers filmmakers, artists and brands a truly sustainable production environment—one that protects our countryside home and inspires others to do the same.
